Q:
No. As a person over 60, I highly recommend a weekly dose of dancing. Neuroscience shows that it dramatically reduces loneliness, reduces chance of dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases, and keeps your body active to increase your healthspan.
Q:
I feel your pain! I was the same way when I started. I was so used to individual sports that I felt VERY awkward in the beginning. But I mustered up the courage until my confidence won out. It feels great to show up to a dance knowing you have worked hard to learn and now you have the chops to give a person you dance with a good experience. They will appreciate you as well. You then have graduated to becoming a leader in your dance community. I encourage you to test it and get involved right away.
Q:
Dancing is something that requires practice to enjoy the full benefit. Pick a time when you know you can participate enough to integrate what you learn. Oftentimes, people continue because they love the social networks they build, the relief they feel from the daily stresses of work, and the bountiful health benefits that matter as you age.
Q:
Everyone is different in what they enjoy. For example, during the first 5 years of my journey I was overwhelmed learning 5-6 dance styles until I settled into West Coast Swing. While I love all of them, WCS teases my intellect, fulfills my need for more expressive connection and is highly flexible to the different genre's of music. I NEVER get bored with WCS, especially if my follow has skills. My suggestion is to follow what interest you. Test out the instructors teaching style. Not all instructors are good instructors for some students. I personally prefer experiential learning as opposed to too much talking in concepts. Those instructors lose me within a few minutes. Check them out and see what you like and go to some of their dance venues to see if you jive with their communities.
If you want to stay on top of the fun we are having in the community, please complete the form to the right and we will keep you up to date.
